Polymer clay Dragon head

This is not exactly a tutorial because I didn’t think it would work and so I didn’t take photos until it was nearly done. This is a blue dragon/fire lizard head made of blue polymer clay. I make quite a lot of things using polymer clay, mostly miniature things normally food or plants, but this is my first try at a dragon. It is blue because I don’t use blue clay often so I have a comparatively large amount of it .

I started with tinfoil scrunched into two shapes: a wedge for the head and a tall thin cone for the neck and shoulders. Next I rolled out the clay about 3mm thick and covered the two tinfoil shapes with it.

Next I attached the head to the neck with some more clay. Then I found a picture of a dragon that I liked, to use as reference. I took two pieces of white/clear stones for the eyes and embedded them in the clay, then rolled out some more clay into a long snake and cut off bits for eyelids. I added more clay for the nose, cheeks, ears/horns, shoulders, wing joints and spikes.

Then I smoothed it until you couldn’t see the the individual pieces. and then added some scales with a pen lid.

Then I brushed mica powder all over it to make it sparkly/shiny: bronze for the horns, pearl for the front, purple for the spines and blue for the body.

Once cooked it will need to be varnished or the powder will rub off.

I’m not sure what I’m going to do with it – it looks nice though, much better than I expected. If I think of a use for it I might make some more. I would like to make a full sized model of a fire lizard but probably not out of clay, something more flexible.
