Menolly wildly grabbed for her carry-sack. With one hand she snatched a fire lizard back from the entrance, and with the other, a spiderclaw from the sack. The little bronze screeched once and then bit the spiderclaw behind the eye, neatly killing it. Dragonsong, chapter 5
Spiderclaws are a crab-like life form indigenous to Pern. They are found on beaches around the planet and make good eating. I decided to make them out of polymer clay as miniatures.
First I created a shell with strips of clay over a knife handle.
I cooked them and then used salmon coloured clay for the insides and white for the undershell. For the legs and eyes I used translucent grey.
They don’t look quite as I wanted them to but they do look like alien crabs so altogether they are a success, and they were fun to make.
